A big thank you to all participants and volunteers who braved a freezing Saturday and comparatively mild Sunday, who drove circles in search of parking, who lost at 50/50, who dug the ball out of the prickle bush, who ate hot dogs with relish, and who cheered for kids, win or lose.
Coaches deserve particular praise for donating time and energy to the sport. You’re the spark that keeps the engine running.
Referees, we can’t thank you enough. For all their cool professionalism and deft game management, Refs remain dedicated amateurs in need of continual praise and support. Without them, we’d be left arguing amongst ourselves, yelling “SUBS” at no one in particular. With 108 games this weekend, we had some referees on field for 9 hours straight, calling 7 consecutive games. Incredible work one and all!
Lastly the players and families, who traveled from all over town and beyond (shout out to Cowichan, Sooke & Saltspring!), who risked injury and defeat for a taste of glory, to play the beautiful game in ugly weather. Hopefully you had some fun!
All proceeds from the Mini-fest will be reinvested in soccer, specifically the turf replacement at Layritz scheduled for June 2023. Yay new turf!
